Retired Ravens offensive tackle Jonathan Ogden and the late former majority owner Art Modell have made the cut and are now among 27 semifinalists for consideration for the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2013.
Ogden joins the following five first-year candidates including offensive lineman Larry Allen, kicker Morten Anderson, safety John Lynch, defensive tackle Warren Sapp and defensive end Michael Strahan.
The Hall of Fame’s Selection Committee chose the 27 semifinalists from the previously announced list of 127 preliminary nominees. The list of semifinalists is typically limited to 25 names but this year there are 27 resulting from a three-person tie for the final position. The Hall of Fame’s By-laws provides that the list shall consist of “twenty-five nominees plus all ties.”
The Ravens won a Super Bowl with Modell as their primary owner following the 2000 season.
Modell later sold his majority interest to Anne Arundel County businessman Steve Bisciotti. The controversial move of the Cleveland Browns to Maryland has been a major obstacle to Modell's candidacy despite his many contributions to the game, including the creation of Monday Night Football.
Ogden was regarded as the best left offensive tackle in his era, stonewalling pass rushers with his nimble feet and massive 6-foot-9, 340-pound frame.
Ogden is regarded as a likely lock to make the Hall of Fame as a first-ballot candidate, but Modell probably faces a more difficult road to induction into the Canton, Ohio-hased Hall of Fame.
