Harbaugh was presented with a plaque and medal from the United States Sports Academy.
Harbaugh joked that his father, former college football coach Jack Harbaugh, had some coaching clinics with Alonzo Stagg in his younger days.
Amos Alonzo Stagg was a college football coaching legend who won 314 games and was known for his innovations he contributed to the game.
"It's a tremendous honor," Harbaugh said. "This is something that means a lot personally and for our family. Knute Rockne said that all of football runs through Amos Alonzo Stagg. He innovated so many things, including the jersey number, reverses which we ran one [Sunday]. Maybe we did it in his honor.
"The huddle, a number of things, coach Stagg changed football. It means so much for a coach and a son of a coach and for our family to be involved with such an award. Thank you very much. It will be treasured."
