It was a quiet return for cornerback Jimmy Smith, who played Sunday for the first time since undergoing sports hernia surgery and missing the previous five games.

During a 34-17 loss to the Denver Broncos on Sunday at M&T Bank Stadium, the 2011 first-round draft pick from Colorado played sparingly in the nickel package and finished with two tackles.

"Very, very rusty," Smith said. "My quick step isn't really there, but I got in there and there weren't any setbacks. The plan was just to get used to the movements again. You torque and jerk your body in certain ways, and with those incisions, it's just a little difficult."

Smith allowed a 15-yard pass to wide receiver Eric Decker that set up fullback Jacob Hester's 1-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. The play was initially ruled a touchdown, but was overturned following an instant-replay review.

"I gave up big plays," Smith said. "I would grade myself as a D-minus."
