Jacoby Jones compares conditioning test issues to taking ACT exam

Pro Bowl kick returner Jacoby Jones' initial failure to pass the Ravens' mandatory conditioning test put him under unwelcome scrutiny.

Many wondered around the NFL what was amiss with the "Dancing With the Stars" third-place contestant.

Jones passed the test on his second try, though, and was activated from the non-football injury list in time for the first full-team practice of training camp Thursday. He was given the designation passed physical upon being cleared to practice.

Jones hasn't let the minor embarrassment of the episode affect his sense of humor.

"I took it just about like when I took the ACT," Jones said. "Eventually, I passed it."

The test is a series of assigned timed running intervals, and it raised eyebrows when Jones was unable to pass it immediately.

How difficult is the running test?

“Nobody likes running just for the heck of it,” Jones said. “It is what it is. You have to take care of your business, and I should have knocked it out on the first time.”

Meanwhile, outside linebacker Courtney Upshaw dropped roughly 20 pounds over the summer after tipping the scales at nearly 295 pounds during the spring. Upshaw attributed the weight gain to missing workouts due to dealing with a personal issue back in Alabama.

Although he still has more weight to drop to get into optimal condition, Upshaw looked better at practice, was moving around more fluidly and seemed to have better stamina after appearing sluggish during offseason practices.

"I feel great, I'm still working to get down some more pounds," Upshaw said. "I felt good out there today. I felt like I moved better than I did in minicamp. I worked hard to get down."

Upshaw declined to say exactly how much he currently weighs, but his trainer, Troy Jones, recently told The Baltimore Sun that the 2012 second-round draft pick was in the 275- to 280-pound range.

"I worked to lose a lot of weight," Upshaw siad. "I'm feeling good. It showed."
