With the Ravens shorthanded at cornerback and safety, Danny Gorrer got a few reps as the third cornerback in Sunday night’s 34-17 victory over the New York Jets, enjoying his longest stint of the season.

When the defense went to its nickel package in the second half, Gorrer lined up against the outside receiver, and starter Lardarius Webb shifted to the slot receiver.

“It was just an amazing feeling being out there with the guys, knowing that they trust me enough to get out there and play with them,” said Gorrer, who broke up one pass. “It was just a dream come true just to play on a regular defense.”

Gorrer’s opportunities occurred as a result of the team's deactivating cornerbacks Chris Carr (left hamstring) and rookie Jimmy Smith (high left ankle sprain) and free safety Haruki Nakamura (right posterior cruciate ligament), placing cornerback Domonique Foxworth (right knee) on injured reserve, and losing strong safety Tom Zbikowski (concussion) during the game.

So the pressure was on Gorrer. Or was it?

“I wouldn’t say it was pressure,” he said. “My feeling was, I didn’t want to let these guys down. That was my main focus, not letting [seven-time Pro Bowl free safety] Ed Reed down and not letting everybody down on defense. I felt like I had a decent game, but we’re going to watch film and I can get better.”

Coach John Harbaugh seemed pleased with the way Gorrer performed.

“Danny played really well,” Harbaugh said. “We asked Danny to play great technique. That’s what Danny does. He’s become a fundamentally excellent corner over the last year, and he can run, and he has good ball skills. He’s going to be a really good corner. I think this was kind of his opening salvo of his career.”
