Courtney Upshaw clears up confusion over conditioning test

Ravens rookie admits he failed first attempt, but denies missing any practices

On Tuesday, several media outlets, including The Sun, reported that Ravens rookie Courtney Upshaw had failed his conditioning test, missed Monday’s practice, and had been placed on the non-football injury list to begin training camp.

But a few hours later, the outside linebacker said via his Twitter account that he had passed the test on Monday and did not sit out practice. On Thursday, Upshaw set the record straight.

“I kind of gave out on my first rep on Monday,” he said. “I missed the walkthrough and thought, ‘I’ve got to get out there for practice.’ So I went to Bob [Rogucki, the team’s strength and conditioning coach] and was contemplating whether I wanted to wait until the next day and miss practice or run the conditioning test. So I said I was going to try and I passed it the same day. So I just missed the walkthrough for that day.”

Upshaw said he wasn’t surprised by the initial reports, but felt a desire to clear up the confusion.

“Honestly, I know people look into things and really don’t know what it is or know much about it,” he said. “I don’t say anything, but I put it out on my Twitter letting them know. I’m not ashamed to tell people that I failed the conditioning test, but I did go back and pass it. So you’ve got to give me my props for going back the same day and passing it after I didn’t pass it the first time.”

Upshaw said the coaching staff has set his target weight at 270 pounds. He declined to say how much weight he has to lose to get to that goal, but he assured that he would reach that objective this season.

“Every day, I’m coming in and getting extra conditioning with Bob,” he said. “So hopefully, I’ll get down there soon [during] preseason. But eventually, I’ll be there. Like I said, I’m feeling good with my weight right now, and when I get down to 270, I’ll feel better.”
