Courtney Upshaw was hoping to salvage a disappointing preseason with a good performance against the St. Louis Rams. Instead, the rookie linebacker left the Edward Jones Dome on Thursday night with more questions about his health and more doubts about his availability for the Ravens’ Sept.10 regular season opener against the Cincinnati Bengals.
Upshaw, who was bothered throughout training camp by a sprained right shoulder, reinjured it in the second quarter of the Ravens’ 31-17 loss. He jogged off the field favoring his shoulder and he did not return to the game.
Ravens coach John Harbaugh said that the second-round draft pick, who missed the team’s preseason opener and about a week of practice time with the injury, will have a magnetic resonance imaging taken on Friday.

“Yeah, I’m concerned,” Harbaugh said. “We’ll find out tomorrow with an MRI what it is.”
With Terrell Suggs not expected to be back until mid-November at the earliest, Upshaw, the rookie out of Alabama, was being counted on to help augment the Ravens’ pass rush. However, he has struggled to make an impact in the preseason, recording three tackles and one sack in three games.
Upshaw, who was in competition with Albert McClellan for the starting rush linebacker job, left the locker room before reporters entered tonight. However, he wrote on his Twitter page that “from here on out I’m approaching everything I do in a way where when I’m done I know no one outworked me on and off the field.”
As for other injuries, Justin Boren, who started at right guard tonight, has a right foot sprain and will have an MRI on Friday. Tight ends Bruce Figgins (right shoulder sprain) and Matt Balasavage (left ankle sprain), and safety Christian Thompson (undisclosed) were also banged up.
