Anthony Allen may not have the decisive edge in a four-way battle to back up starting tailback Ray Rice, but his weight won’t be an issue.
The 6-foot-1 Allen said he weighs about 225 pounds, which is 10 pounds less than his weight from last season. He said the weight loss coincided with shaving five percent of his body fat – all in the name of being a better back.
“I just toned up,” he said after Wednesday’s practice at the team’s headquarters in Owings Mills. "I just wanted to get a little faster, a little quicker. I still have my bulk. I’m still a big back. I just wanted to make sure I got some of that body fat off.”

Allen said he adhered to healthier diet, which included cutting out late-night snacks. The most significant casualty was ice cream.
“I love ice cream,” he said. “Ice cream was my favorite thing in the world. I can’t eat it now, and it hurts me. I used to always have a bowl of ice cream before I went to sleep, but now I can’t get it. Every now and then, I might splurge and get some sugar-free ice cream or some lowfat yogurt, but it’s not the same. I used to get that Ben & Jerry’s Red Velvet Cake, the cookies and cream one, the cookie dough one. I’m a Ben & Jerry’s connoisseur. I used to have every flavor and just try it out.”
Allen said he didn’t slowly wean himself off ice cream. He had to take more drastic measures.
“I had to go cold turkey,” he said. “I just had to take out all the ice cream I had in my fridge and throw it away. I stay away from that area when I go to the grocery store. I can’t walk down the freezer aisle. I also try to stay away from the ice cream kiosks because I’ll be quick to grab a Choco Taco or something.”
