It would be an understatement to say that it was a rough preseason for Ravens running back Anthony Allen.
He struggled mightily in pass protection, allowing two sacks.
And he rushed for only 19 yards on 11 carries, an average of 1.7 yards per carry.
After ranking second on the depth chart behind Pro Bowl runner Ray Rice to begin training camp, Allen lost his job completely as he was released during the final major cutdown. Now, rookie third-round draft pick Bernard Pierce is the primary backup to Rice followed by undrafted rookie Bobby Rainey.
Signed to the practice squad after going unclaimed off waivers, Allen is now trying to adjust to his new status after playing in five games as a rookie last season and rushing for eight yards on three carries.
"It's like life, you got to go through adversity," said Allen, a former seventh-round draft pick from Georgia Tech. "This is an adverse situation. You got to overcome it. I'm still on the practice squad. I'm still on the team. I've still got a foot in the league. I've got to work my way back up.
It was particularly disappointing for Allen to play so poorly after dedicating himself for the entire offseason and getting into much better shape at 6-foot-1, 223 pounds. Allen changed his diet, cutting out ice cream and other dairy products and emphasizing lean proteins and vegetables.
"In the offseason, I worked on getting my body right and doing everything right," Allen said. "I was in great shape, but I had some mistakes. It was just some little things.
"One of the most important things you learn about playing football is you got to focus and then refocus. I'm on the refocus part now. It's time to refocus, buckle back down and get back on top."Copyright © 2015, The Baltimore Sun
