O'Callahan finds comfort in Tribune's Boston tribute

Hang in there, Boston

Hang in there, Boston (April 18, 2013)

I got a lot of emails Tuesday. I was being thanked for the powerful cover of our sports section that extended an open hand and heart to Boston teams in the wake of the horrific bombing during the Boston Marathon on Monday.

I wish I could take credit for our moving presentation, but I made only a small contribution near the bottom. The impactful idea, words and design came from our Associate Managing Editor/Sports Mike Kellams and his creative staff.

I wanted to share one of the emails. It came from Jack O’Callahan, a Boston boy who won a gold medal as a member of the 1980 U.S. hockey team. After the “Miracle on Ice,’’ he played for the Blackhawks. He remains in Chicago and is a principal at Beanpot Financial Services, a company he co-founded in 1992.

“Not sure whose idea it was to lead the front page of the Trib sports today with that tribute to Boston and all Bostonians, but please pass along my heartfelt thanks. It meant a lot to me.

“Yesterday was an emotional day. I was sitting in my office in Chicago filling up with tears of anger and sadness, wishing that I could be in Boston to help out. I was and still am full of a lot of feelings and emotions.

“I grew up maybe a mile from the Boston Marathon finish line and went to both college and high school maybe a mile in the other direction. Before my dad retired, his office was across the street. I have been getting a lot of calls and emails today from my many friends and family members back in Boston, complimenting the Chicago Trib on their heartfelt message of solidarity to my hometown. Your gesture meant a great deal.

“I have lived in Chicago for 30 years, it is a great city that I love, even though I will always call Boston my home. Today, the connection you made between my home and my adopted home has helped ease the pain and I send sincere thanks.

“Here's hoping they find the culprits as quickly as possible and then just as quickly, hang them all in the town square. God Bless America.’’
