Be afraid, Jay Cutler. Be very afraid.
The Bears’ latest reported moves, or latest reported attempts at moves, might put your life and suspect knee in greater jeopardy.
the Bears were looking to trade tight end Greg Olsen and encouraged his agent to help negotiate things.
Then came word the Bears signed Pittsburgh’s backup blocking tight end, Matt Spaeth, which did two things that ought to worry Cutler and those who love him.
First, the Bears’ signing of Spaeth seemingly killed a lot of their leverage in trying to trade Olsen, which could limit the additional help that Cutler could use on the chaotic-looking offensive line and in a wide receiver corps that couldn’t outscore a tight end.
That’s the second part. By looking to trade a guy who tied for the team lead in receiving touchdowns and who was a Cutler favorite in order to bring in a blocking tight end not known for great hands, the Bears appear to be caving in to Mike Martz, known to quarterbacks as Dr. Death.
This kind of personnel swap at tight end is exactly what Martz would want. It appears the crazy guy in the offensive coordinator’s room is going to force the Bears to play his version of an offense that nearly killed Cutler instead of the Mike Tice version of the Martz offense that stressed balance and sanity.
The offensive line, the key to any success under Martz’s quarterback-killing, sometimes slow-developing offense, is a mess, and then one of Cutler’s most reliable hot reads is headed out of town, and all this comes after his aborted engagement to that D-list actress. Tell you what, anybody who loves the kid ought to send a security detail to Earl Bennett’s place.
Doesn't anyone like Jay Cutler anymore?
