Tribune reporter Jared S. Hopkins spent nearly four full days with Marshall in Florida at his home in April and talked with the 28-year-old for hours. Below are a collection of some of Marshall's quotes:
"No telling, man. As of now, where we stand today, definitely in psychology. So intrigued, and it stimulates me, just learning how the mind works and just understanding people just through my own experience. So that's my goal. I'm definitely looking to get my master's degree in psychology and incorporate that with my foundation."
Responding to the suggestion that fans don't care about only controversy, that they want to know all angles of an athlete:
"Of course. A fan wants to know what kind of underwear you wear ... Of course they want to know everything about your life."
On his dad waking him up in the middle of the night to surprise him at the University of Florida, where as a kid he aspired to attend:
"Those are the things that my dad did to create that drive, that excitement in me, that interest in me, keep it going. Those are good things my father did that helped me along the way -- I'm a 6th grader and I'm walking around campus, 4 o'clock in the morning, just dreaming, like, wow this is where I'm going to be one day."
On retired NFL star Cris Carter, whose facility Marshall trained at in college and has been linked to being a mentor:
"Honestly there ain't too much of a relationship there," he says. "I always wanna be around people that I can pick their brains but now there's just nothing. He was busy back then. I'd come down and work out and he might be at the facility once or twice in a month. So I really never built a relationship with him. The reason why I may sound a little defensive right now is because there's stories out there as far as him being my mentor or someone I go to, but that's not true basically."
Tim Tebow or Mark Sanchez?
"I'll take Sanchez."
When did he know he and Jay had a connection:
[Snaps his fingers]. "Right away ... A lot of guys don't have that feel for the game. Jay has that feel for the game. I have a feel for the game. "
On Bears/former Broncos quarterbacks coach Jeremy Bates allowing Marshall and Cutler to operate freely while in Denver:
"He wouldn't even give us a play. We'll just go out there with no play, and Jay would give me a signal, I would give Jay a signal ... We just had that feel for the game where we'll come out with a game plan -- like, OK, 'They want to do this, we want to do this. This is our counter to that. This is our plan A, B and C."
Marshall, whose dad owned clothing stores and his mom owned salons, likes to look good:
"You gotta have nice shoes. You can't have on a nice outfit with some terrible shoes."
On receivers coaches:
