CATCH OF THE DAY: Usually awarded to an offensive player, linebacker Anthony Leon took the honor. During a 7-on-7 drill, quarterback Hunter Cantwell slung a pass over the middle that was tipped by linebacker Josh Bynes. Bynes tried to haul in the pass, but the ball traveled down the front of his jersey before caroming off the top of his shoe. That's when Leon snatched the ball from the top of his shoelaces and returned it for several yards before getting held up by some of the offensive players.
CATCH OF THE DAY #2: If not for Leon, rookie wide receiver Terrell Zachery would have gotten the award. He caught a pass thrown by rookie quarterback Tyrod Taylor that was thrown to Zachery's back right shoulder. Zachery leaped into the air, got his right hand on the ball, and pulled it in before falling to the turf in the end zone.
Brendon Ayanbadejo blew up running back Matt Lawrence at the line of scrimmage. Ayanbadejo also worked over rookie running back Walter Sanders during their matchup.
CAPITAL GAINS: During a rushing drill in which the offense had to convert short yardage for the first down via the ground game, the unit succeeded four times in seven attempts, including an 8-yard run by rookie Anthony Allen. But on the last attempt — a fourth-and-1 — Leon tackled Allen for a 6-yard loss.
FIRST MISS: Kicker Billy Cundiff made his first six attempts of the day — including from 50 and 59 yards. But he pushed a 45-yarder wide right, marking his first miss in 24 chances.
TWO-MINUTE DRILL TOO SLOW: The offense sputtered badly during a two-minute exercise. Although quarterback Joe Flacco found tight end Dennis Pitta for a first down on fourth-and-6, the unit had just 10 seconds left from midfield. On the ensuing play, wide receiver Brandon Jones caught a 10-yard bullet from Flacco, but he was tackled in bounds, and the time expired before the offense could spike the ball.
INJURIES: Players who are on the physically-unable-to-perform list include wide receiver David Reed (wrist), offensive tackle Ramon Harewood (knees), defensive tackle Brandon McKinney (knee) and long snapper Morgan Cox (knee). Inside linebacker Jameel McClain (unspecified) and strong safety Tom Zbikowski (skin condition) are on the non-football injury/illness list. Players who did not practice include wide receivers James Hardy (hamstring) and rookies Torrey Smith (hamstring) and Hakeem Moore (unspecified), cornerbacks Domonique Foxworth (right knee) and rookie Jimmy Smith (groin), center Matt Birk (left knee), rookie guard/center Justin Boren (unspecified) and defensive tackle Terron Sanders (unspecified).
OVERHEARD: "Get out of the way, Moeller!" — Secondary coach Teryl Austin, claiming that offensive line coach Andy Moeller didn't move fast enough as rookie cornerback Josh Victorian dropped a potential interception of Taylor's pass to Zachery.
NEXT DAY'S SCHEDULE: Wednesday's session is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. and could run as long as three hours. All practices are closed to the public.
