The Ravens escaped their first meeting with the Cleveland Browns on Sept. 27 with a 23-16 win, and the game-winning touchdown was provided when cornerback Cary Williams jumped an out route run by wide receiver Travis Benjamin for an interception he returned 63 yards for a touchdown. This week, Williams recalled his perspective on the turning point of the game.
What do you remember about that interception?
"I just recognized the formation. Once I saw that and recognized the motion, then I knew it was going to be a play that I had seen before in previous games. I just keyed on it and once I saw him break to the outside, I broke outside with him. The ball was thrown a little inside, and that's when I took advantage of it."
Were you reading QB Brandon Weeden's eyes on that play?
"Initially, it started off with me going out there and trying to guard No. 80 [Travis Benjamin]. When he went out and came back in motion, I said, 'OK, this is something that I've seen before.' So I had to play my keys, and if I got a particular route, then I had to take advantage of it. And once I saw that formation, I jumped it. I read my keys and played the ball."
Can you describe the feeling of not only getting your first career interception, but also returning it for a touchdown?
"It was great, and it was a great opportunity for me. It definitely jump-started my season and had me playing at a much higher level. But the one thing about this league is that each and every week is different. You have to fare well, you have to practice well, and that's what helps you become a better player on Sundays. Their offense has gotten better. Us as a defense, we have to continue to get better and continue to make progress. We've got to be physical up front. Right now, they have everything clicking on all cylinders, and it's our job to disrupt the timing as best as we can and just play physical and get back to the defense we know how to be and dominate these guys."
