Wide receiver Andre Caldwell scores the winning touchdown for the Bengals on a pass from Carson Palmer with 22 seconds left. (Christopher T. Assaf, Baltimore Sun / October 11, 2009) |
The Ravens were penalized three times on the Cincinnati Bengals' game-winning drive, setting up quarterback Carson Palmer's 20-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Andre Caldwell with 22 seconds left in front of 71,161 at M&T Bank Stadium on Oct. 11. It was the Ravens' second straight loss and followed a tough setback to the New England Patriots in which penalties also played a role. The defeat, which came against a team that finished 4-11-1 the previous season, dropped the Ravens into a second-place tie with the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC North.
WHAT HAPPENED: The Ravens' offense, which had been shut down all day, put the game into the hands of the defense with one play, a 48-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Joe Flacco to running back Ray Rice that was more Rice than anything. He braced himself with his left arm to keep from falling and outraced the Bengals to the end zone. After the Bengals got the ball back with 2:15 remaining in the game, the defense committed three penalties - illegal contact on Chris Carr, unnecessary roughness on Ray Lewis and pass interference on Frank Walker - that accounted for 30 of the 80 yards on Cincinnati's last drive.
KEY STATS: The Ravens yielded 100 or more rushing yards to an opposing player for the first time in 40 games. Bengals running back Cedric Benson eclipsed the mark on a 28-yard touchdown in the third quarter. He finished with 120 yards on 27 carries. ... Rice carried 14 times for 69 yards and caught seven passes for 74 yards. ... Palmer was 18-for-31 for 271 yards and the winning touchdown, while Flacco was 22-for-31 for 186 yards and the touchdown to Rice.
QUOTABLE: "You have to find a way not to have penalties. You have to find a way to get them sacked. You have to find a way to make a play - an interception, whatever it might be - and I think we all have to do a better job of that." - Ravens coach John Harbaugh
QUOTABLE: "Being up and [getting a long field], I'd take that opportunity every day of the week. I want to be in that opportunity every single time."- Ravens linebacker Jarret Johnson
