8. Cigar (1990- )

Country Life Farm, near Bel Air, is the birthplace of Cigar, winner of 16 consecutive stakes races and nearly $10 million in earnings. Named Horse of the Decade for the 1990s, the big bay spent two months in Harford County before going to Kentucky for a career that made him a racing legend. Nondescript early on, Cigar blossomed at age 5, winning all 10 of his stakes races (including the Pimlico Special) and setting a single-year earnings record ($4.8 million) in 1995. He won his first six starts the next year, tying the record of 16 straight set by Citation nearly half a century before. Among those victories: the first Dubai World Cup, racing's richest event. Twice U.S. Horse of the Year, Cigar is one of two Maryland-foaled thoroughbreds to be thus honored. Challedon is the other.Barbara D. Livingston/Special To The Sun
