GAYLORD — Petoskey senior Jordan Haggerty and junior Nick Strobel each placed third in their respective weight classes as the Northmen finished 10th overall at the 30-team Northern Michigan Championships Saturday at Gaylord High School.
Host Gaylord won the tournament with a team score of 140.5 points, while Roscommon was second, 126; followed by St. Ignace, 122.5; West Branch Ogemaw Heights, 116; and Gladstone, 112.
The Northmen finished with 78 points, while Boyne City was 27th with 17 points and Charlevoix was 28th with six points.
“The top five teams scored in the 100-150 point range,” Petoskey coach Nate Gross said. “Teams 6-10 were separated by 7 1/2 points. Another couple wins and we are in sixth place rather than 10, but overall we wrestled well and placed above our seeds.
“One of the tough things about a tournament of this size is that we haven’t seen many of the schools and because we wrestle a stronger schedule than many of them, our records will get us seeded lower than our ability,” Gross added. “One great thing about this is there are 30 schools and each weight class is going to be tough, placing highly out of 30 competitors is something to be proud of. Every weight class was represented by at least one ranked wrestler, and in most cases two or three.”
Haggerty, who was seeded second, finished with a 3-1 record to place third. Haggerty pinned Benzie Central’s Tom Smith in 40 seconds, then pinned Cody Malonski of Gladstone in 3 minutes, 5 seconds; fell to Marquette’s Joe Iwanicki on a 2-1 decision and pinned Kingsley’s Josh Parks, 2:35.
“Jordan lost to the No. 3 seed on a last second takedown,” Gross said. “He recovered well and dominated his opponent for third.”
