The Petoskey High School ski teams swept both sides of a dual meet with Gaylord at Walloon Hills. For the boys, Dan Bates posted an overall time of 105.4 to take first, while Cleve Paxton and Mark Crosby finshed second and third respectively.
For the girls, LaVour Hewitt finished with at 124.6 overall finishing in first, while Patti Phillips would finish in third for the Northmen.
— The Northern Michigan Outdoor Speed Skating Championships held at the Winter Sports Park saw Petoskey’s Mary Wright sweep first place finishes in the 220, 440, 880, three-quarter mile and mile.
— Pellston, a Northern Michigan Class C Conference member, moved up the UPI Class D boys’ basketball rankings to No. 8, while fellow conference rival Harbor Springs came in at No. 10.
Both teams were idle during the week because of the weather.
— Petoskey secured at least second-place in the Michigan Huron Shores Conference boys’ basketball race with an 84-65 win over Grayling. Mike Davies became the first Northman to surpass 1,000 points in his career with his first bucket of the game at the 35 second mark. Davies finished with 25 points.
Archie Kiogima added 16 points, while Robin Hill and Bruce Hilton would combine for 31 rebounds.
— In the Northern Lower Michigan League, Harbor Springs ran past Pellston, 96-44.
The Rams were paced by Jeff Bodzick with 28 points and Glenn Morse with 13, while Rick Coffin led the Hornets with 12 points.
— Bill Steffel of the Petoskey Speed Skating Club took five fifth-place finishes in the senior division during the Northern Michigan Outdoor Speed Skating Championships. Renee Russell of Petoskey placed third overall in her division with a second place finish in the one-sixth mile skate.
The annual championships at the Petoskey Winter Sports Park were nearly canceled because of warm temperatures and rain that fell during the week, but City Parks and Recreation supervisor Clark Ketchum and his crew were credited with saving the event.
— Micky Walker scored 22 points for the Petoskey High School boys’ basketball team in a non-league win over Sault Ste. Marie, 66-46.
“We played under much better control tonight,” Petoskey coach Paul VanWagoner said.
— Gaylord St. Mary upset Ski Valley Conference leader Harbor Springs, 77-56.
Kurt Erxleben scored 14 points and Rob Kowalski added 12 for the Rams. Also, Pellston would have 29-5 third quarter surge to get past Bellaire, 62-56.
Greg Robinson, a 6-8 Hornet center, scored 25 points for Pellston.
