Garber leads Bulldogs to win at Collegiate Cup Challenge

The No. 8 ranked Georgia Bulldog team — which one day earlier captured the 54-hole team crown — was the only SEC team to go undefeated, 5-0, against their ACC counterparts.
The tournament featured five teams each from the SEC and ACC with three rounds of stroke play and a final 18-hole round of match play.
During the inaugural 54-hole stroke play event, Garber placed second in stroke play with a 9-under 204, which included a third round 4-under 67 to lead the Bulldogs to a win, giving coach Chris Haack his 50th career victory.
Texas A&M’s Ben Crancer was medalist at 16-under 197.
Garber and the Bulldogs are scheduled to play in the Brickyard Collegiate Championship in Macon, Ga., Oct. 4-6.
— Sophomore outside hitter Tayler Friend had 12 kills, 10 digs, and one assist for the Grand Rapids Community College volleyball team during a Michigan Community College Athletic Association win over Muskegon Community College, 25-22, 25-16, 24-26, 27-25.
Friend, a Pellston graduate, added five kills and three digs for the Raiders during a five-set league win over Jackson Community College, later in the week, 25-16, 23-25, 19-25, 25-18, 15-9.
GRCC is 14-3 overall, 4-0 in league.
— Junior setter Carly Searles had 43 assists and 10 digs for Trine (Ind.) University volleyball team during a MIAA match win over Kalamazoo College, 21-25, 25-16, 25-19, 25-17.
Searles, a Petoskey graduate, added 40 assists and 14 digs during a match against Saint Mary’s (Ind.), a loss, earlier in the week.
Searles leads the Thunder with 514 assists on the season.
Trine is 8-8 overall, 3-3 in league.
— Senior midfielder K.C. McCary scored her first goal of the season for Northern Michigan University during a GLIAC women’s soccer shutout 3-0, over Lake Erie (Ohio) Colllege.
McCary, a Charlevoix graduate, has started and played in six games for the Wildcats with one goal on three shots on goal.
Taylor Smith, a 2011 Charlevoix grad, registered three shots in the win over Lake Erie.
Smith has played in six games including four as a starter taking six shots.
Northern is 1-5 overall, 1-0 in league.
— Senior midfielder Jason Muller scored two goals for the Hope College men’s soccer team during a non-league win over Dominican (Ill.) College, 3-0.
