Petoskey High School graduate Carly Searles turned in an historic performance in helping the Trine (Ind.) University volleyball team to a runner-up finish at the Ohio Northern University Tournament.
Searles, a sophomore, became just the second player in Trine history to record a triple-double as the Thunder topped Thiel (Pa.) University, 25-20, 13-25, 16-25, 27-25, 15-12. It was the season-opening match for the Thunder.
Searles finished with 19 digs, 14 kills, and 13 assists.
Trine finished 3-1 in the tournament. The Thunder fell in four games to Ohio Northern, and recorded four-set victories over 21st-ranked Heidelberg (Ohio) and Carnegie Mellon (Pa.).
Searles finished the tournament with 61 digs, 46 kills and 25 assists.
On Tuesday, Searles finished with six kills, three assists and two digs as the Thunder topped St. Mary's (Ind.) College, 25-17, 25-18, 25-18, in its Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association opener.
Trine is 4-1 on the season.
-- Charlevoix graduate Eric Buday placed 20th for Michigan State at the Jeff Drenth Memorial Cross Country race at Central Michigan.
Buday, a redshirt freshman, finished the 5k run in 16 minutes 19.45 seconds. Seventy-four runners comprised the race.
-- Kenny Provost, a 2009 Petoskey grad, recorded four tackles in helping Franklin & Marshall (Pa.) to a 35-28 season-opening win over Washington and Lee (Va.).
Provost is a 6-foot-1, 275-pound senior defensive lineman.
-- Trever Kruzel, a 2010 Boyne City grad, had one reception for 16 yards as Northern Michigan opened the football season witha 45-10 non-league loss to Findlay (Ohio).
Kruzel, a 6-1, 240-pound junior, is the Wildcats' starting fullback.
Josh Hogan, a 2012 Charlevoix graduate, is a freshman H back on the Wildcat roster.
-- Taylor Smith, a 2011 Charlevoix grad, recorded one shot on goal while logging 44 minutes for the Northern Michigan women's soccer team during a 4-0 non-league loss to Minnesota Duluth. NMU is 1-2 overall.
It was the first action of the season for Smith, a sophomore defender.
-- Chad Ellis, a 2008 Petoskey grad, is serving as a intern assistant defensive line coach for Texas Lutheran University.
Ellis, who graduated from Texas Lutheran in 2012, was a two-year letterman for the Bulldogs, starting at defensive end.
-- Albion College volleyball player Jalyn Ingalls will serve as the vice president of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Student-Athlete Advisory Committee this fall, and will become committee president in the spring.
