Beyond the Scoreboard is seeking nominations for its annual Champions of Character awards.
Beyond the Scoreboard annually awards and recognizes area individuals and teams who epitomize what is known as the six pillars of character: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship.
Anyone in the community can nominate someone for an award in the following categories: youth sport athlete; high school athlete; youth sport coach; high school coach; youth sport leader; officials, parents, fantastic fan and lifetime achievement. Nomination guidelines and forms can be downloaded from the organization’s website at www.beyondthescoreboard.org.
Nominations must be postmarked no later than April 16 to be considered this year.
The banquet and awards program is organized by Beyond the Scoreboard, Inc. a Northern Michigan based volunteer group of area sport leaders and supporters dedicated to teaching positive character and sportsmanship through youth and interscholastic athletic programs.
Beyond the Scoreboard offers support to coaches, athletes, parents and officials with methods and techniques of positive coaching and participation. Ron Goodman, executive director of Beyond the Scoreboard, says that the organization’s mission can be easily summarized in the goal of building “winners in life” through sports.
Jon Jansen, former University of Michigan All-American football player and 12-year NFL professional, will be this year’s featured speaker for the annual Champions of Character banquet. The awards program and banquet will be held at 6 p.m. Monday, June 10 at the Emmet County Fairgrounds Community Building.
Jansen, along with his wife, Martha, and four children, reside in the Northern Michigan area and Jansen has become a community leader with a personal desire to support athletics and athletes.
He is a co-owner of the Petoskey CrossFit facility and also is a football broadcaster on the Big 10 Network. Jansen can be heard often on local programs such as The Ticket and was the featured speaker for last year’s Petoskey athletic banquet.
Jansen not only was a very successful offensive lineman at Michigan and in the NFL with the Washington Redskins and Detroit Lions, but was also a leader at both levels. He was a captain for the University of Michigan 1997 National Championship team and the 1998 Big 10 Champions.
Jansen will speak how sports helped him become a winner in life.
Jansen follows a tradition of noted speakers for the banquet including Bobby Ross, a former high school and NFL coach including the Detroit Lions from 1997-2000; General Peter Schoomaker, a now retired U.S. Army Chief of Staff; Sheila Taaormina, a participant in four Olympics in swimming and triathlon and the women’s modern pentathlon; Jack Roberts, executive director of the Michigan High School Athletic Associations and Harold Slemmer, executive director of the Arizona High School Athletic Association.
