The Maryland Saltwater Sportfishermen's Association will host the first event of its youth fishing seminar series on Thursday at 6 p.m. at the Alltackle retail showroom in Annapolis.

The event, one of eight that MSSA will host this year for young fishermen and their parents, will feature lessons on knots and fish handling from Captain Randy Dean and his son, Ryan. Pizza and beverages will be served.

In recent years, MSSA has hosted a handful of events that have allowed children and parents to learn about fishing together. But the youth seminar series, which consists of one event per month through November, is something new.

"A critical part of protecting sportfishing for the future is recruiting and retaining youth anglers," MSSA executive director Dave Smith said. The youth seminar series "is designed to do just that."

The series consists of five speaking events and three outdoor trips. The speaking events will be held at Alltackle and cover topics from fish biology to casting techniques to boating safety. Each will be led by a professional angler or someone in the sportfishing industry.

Among the remaining events is a tour of Judge Yachts boat-building store in Denton, a fishing derby at Sandy Point State Park and a trip for 30 children and 30parents aboard the Miss Chesapeake out of Chesapeake Beach.

All events are free and open to the public.

"If we do anything this year, I hope the MSSA is successful in introducing fishing to as many kids as possible," MSSA president Vince Ringgold said.
