Fishing for pickerel
Monday, Jan. 16: Local angler John Veil will speak at a meeting of the Broadneck chapter of the Maryland Saltwater Sportfishing Association about "Catching Pickerel in Tidal Waters." The talk will cover where to look for pickerel, what types of tackle to use, and how to handle pickerel after catching them. The meeting starts at 7 p.m. with the talk beginning at 7:30; it's at American Legion Post 175 at 832 Manhattan Beach Road in Severna Park. Veil will have copies of his "Fishing in the Comfort Zone" for sale.
Gunpowder, trout talk
Wednesday, Jan. 18: Mark Staley of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources will discuss the state of the Gunpowder River and report on DNR's latest electroshock survey of the trout population when he speaks to Maryland Trout Unlimited from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Towson Presbyterian Church, 400 W. Lefty Kreh TieFest
March 18: The 17th annual Lefty Kreh TieFest, the Mid-Atlantic's foremost fly fishing event, will be 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Kent Narrows Yacht Club. More than 30 tiers will demonstrate fly patterns, there will be casting demonstrations, and shops and equipment manufacturers will show off products. There will be tying classes for children and novice tiers. Admission is $10 for adults, and free for children 16 and under. Lefty Kreh and Bob Clouser are among those committed to attend. Adam Thompson 5K Run/Walk
April 30: The Adam Thompson 5K Run/Walk will start at 8 a.m. at Harford Community College, 401 Thomas Run Road in Bel Air. The race honors the memory of Thompson, a first-year HCC student who was killed in an automobile accident in 2011. Proceeds will benefit scholarships supporting students attending the school. Brigance 5.7K event
April 30: The Brigance Brigade Foundation's fourth annual 5.7K Championship Race & 1.57 Mile Family Run/Walk will celebrate the kickoff of ALS Awareness Month (May) and the 10-year anniversary of former Ravens linebacker O.J. Brigance's ALS diagnosis (May 16). The family-friendly event at Canton Waterfront Park will feature a timed 5.7K run, a 1.57-mile family run/walk and a Kid's Fun Run for children 8 and under. Proceeds will further the foundation's mission to equip, encourage and empower people living with ALS by providing access to needed equipment, resource guidance and additional support services.
