U.S. pulls away from Mexico, 127-100

Mexico kept the game respectable into the second half before the United States pulled away for a 127-100 victory last night in the second round of the FIBA Americas basketball tournament in Las Vegas. Carmelo Anthony (Towson Catholic) scored 28 points, tying the American record in an Olympic qualifier. The Mexicans, who sneaked into the second round through a three-team tiebreaker, outplayed their more talented counterparts for much of the second and third quarters before the U.S. put them away for good late in the third. Kobe Bryant added 21 points, and LeBron James and Dwight Howard had 19 apiece for the United States, which faces Puerto Rico tonight. The top two finishers in the 10-team tournament earn berths in the Beijing Olympics.

QB Evans named N.C. State starter

Junior Daniel Evans will start at quarterback for North Carolina State in its opener Saturday against Central Florida, coach Tom O'Brien said. Evans, who started nine games last year, beat out Nebraska transfer Harrison Beck and Justin Burke for the job. Evans threw for 1,843 yards last year.

• Florida // Former Southern California running back Emmanuel Moody is transferring to Florida. A 6-foot-1, 205-pound sophomore from Texas, Moody decided to transfer after getting caught in a glut of highly touted tailbacks with the Trojans. He has to sit out the 2007 season under the NCAA's transfer rules and will have three years of eligibility remaining.

• Alabama // Receiver Keith Brown and linebacker Prince Hall were suspended for Saturday's season opener against Western Carolina for unspecified violations of team rules, coach Nick Saban said. Saban said both 2006 starters had been working in backup roles throughout fall camp. Hall started nine games as a freshman and finished with 77 tackles. Brown has been the Crimson Tide's No. 2 receiver the past two seasons and gained 590 yards on 44 catches last season.

• Obituary // Former Louisiana Tech All-America wide receiver Tommy Spinks, who teamed with Terry Bradshaw to form one of the most feared tandems in college football, died Sunday at his home in Arlington, Texas, after a short illness. He was 58. Spinks played for Louisiana Tech from 1966 through 1969.

Brazil's president
assures FIFA on 2014

Brazil President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva assured FIFA officials that he will do everything he can to guarantee the nation is chosen to host the 2014 World Cup. Silva made the comments in a meeting with a five-member FIFA delegation evaluating the cities hoping to host matches if Brazil stages the tournament, said Ricardo Teixeira, president of the Brazilian Confederation of Football. Brazil is the sole candidate to stage the 2014 World Cup, but soccer's governing body has warned that it can stage the competition elsewhere if Brazil fails to meet the requirements for the quadrennial event. FIFA's executive committee is to vote Oct. 30, a day after Brazil makes its final bid presentation. The 2010 World Cup will be in South Africa.

• Banquet // The Babe Ruth Museum announced that its October gala will celebrate former Ravens owner Art Modell. "Thanks Art! A Celebration of Art Modell" will take place Oct. 23 at Valley Mansion in Cockeysville. Proceeds will benefit Baltimore City students, who will receive free admission for a year to the Sports Legends Museum at Camden Yards and the Babe Ruth Birthplace.
