Nets trade Jefferson to Bucks

The Milwaukee Bucks traded forwards Yi Jianlian and Bobby Simmons to the New Jersey Nets for forward Richard Jefferson yesterday.

Milwaukee has been looking to rid itself of several bloated contracts and decided it was worth trading the rookie whom former general manager Larry Harris selected with the No. 6 pick last year along with the rest of Simmons' contract. Simmons has two years and a little more than $20 million left on his deal.

Jefferson, the second leading scorer in Nets history, averaged 22.6 points last season and has three years and more than $42 million left on his contract.

Yi made played in 66 games, averaging 8.6 points and 5.2 rebounds. Simmons averaged 7.6 points in 70 games.

• More NBA // The trial over whether the Seattle SuperSonics must play out the final two years of their lease at KeyArena has ended. U.S. District Judge Marsha Pechman will decide Wednesday whether the team must be held to the lease for the next two years or can relocate to Oklahoma City.

• Ravens // The team cut three rookie free agents - tight end Xavier Lee, guard Brandon Barnes and punter Benajmin Dato. Lee was a converted quarterback from Florida State. Barnes played at Grand Valley State and Dato at Fordham.

• Colleges // Indiana athletic director Rick Greenspan will resign at the end of December amid NCAA allegations that the school failed to monitor the men's basketball team. The NCAA said basketball coach Kelvin Sampson committed five major recruiting violations during his 1 1/2 years at the school. ... Ron Ginyard has joined the Navy basketball staff as an assistant coach. Ginyard comes to Navy after spending one year in the same capacity at The Citadel. ... Minnesota football recruit Sam Maresh underwent open-heart surgery at the Mayo Clinic. Doctors deemed the procedure, which replaced a valve in Maresh's heart, a success.

• Golf // Corey Pavin, Bo Van Pelt and Dudley Hart shot 8-under 64s to share the first-round lead at the PGA Buick Open in Grand Blanc, Mich. Briny Baird and Daniel Chopra were a stroke back. ... Denny McCarthy shot a bogey-free round of 5-under-par 67 and took the first-round lead in the Junior Amateur championship of the Middle Atlantic Golf Association at Old South Country Club in Lothian.

NHL // The NHL's salary cap is on the rise again. The league and the NHL Players' Association announced that each team will have a maximum of $56.7 million to spend for the 2008-09 season - up $6.4 million from last season. The minimum payroll was set at $40.7 million for each of the 30 teams. ... Defenseman Scott Niedermayer has ruled out retirement and will play another season with the Anaheim Ducks. ... Forward Martin Straka has decided to leave the NHL and return to his former Czech club. Straka played for the New York Rangers the past three seasons.
