Phelps sets U.S. mark in 400 IM at Cup meet

Michael Phelps set an American record in winning the 400-meter individual medley and followed that with a win in the 100 individual medley in the FINA World Cup in East Meadow, N.Y., getting off to a strong start at the seventh stop of the eight-meet series. Phelps, who is from Rodgers Forge, finished the 400 in 4 minutes, 3.99 seconds on the 25-meter short course at the Nassau County Aquatic Center. He then took care of the 100 in 53.21. Luca Marin (4:07.76) of Italy was the silver medalist in the 400, and Thiago Pereira (53.49) of Brazil was runner-up in the 100. Phelps is entered in today's 200 freestyle and 200 individual medley.

Jones // Leisel Jones set a world record in the women's 100-meter breaststroke at Australia's swimming trials for the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne. Jones finished in 1 minute, 5.71 seconds in the final, cutting .49 of a second off American Jessica Hardy's record set at last year's world championships in Montreal.

upsets Sharapova

Continuing her impressive comeback, Martina Hingis beat top-seeded Maria Sharapova, 6-3, 6-1, to advance to the final of the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo, where she'll face Elena Dementieva or Anastasia Myskina.

ATP International Tennis Championships // Top-seeded and ninth-ranked Andre Agassi, playing in his first tournament of the year, was upset, 6-4, 6-2, by Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in the quarterfinals in Delray Beach, Fla.

No. 20 Temple women
top Richmond, 65-46

Candice Dupree scored 16 points and Khadija Bowens added 15 to lead the No. 20 Temple women's basketball team (16-5, 7-2 Atlantic 10) to a 65-46 victory over visiting Richmond (8-14, 3-7).

State women // Lauren Troupe had a game-high 17 points to lead visiting Loyola (13-7, 8-3 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) in a 62-58 win over Niagara (3-17, 2-9). ... Towson (7-12, 2-8 Colonial Athletic Association) committed 22 turnovers and fell, 56-50, to host UNC-Wilmington (12-7, 6-4).

Horse racing

Napravnik OK
after fall at Laurel

Leading rider Rosie Napravnik sat out her final five mounts of the day after being tossed from her horse during the third race at Laurel Park. Racing down the muddy backstretch, her horse took a misstep and faltered, sending Napravnik up and out of the saddle and hard to the ground. Napravnik, 17, was down for a minute before she was able to stand on her own. She was taken to Laurel-Beltsville Hospital, where she was declared healthy.

Giacomo // Long-shot Kentucky Derby winner Giacomo will compete for the first time in almost eight months today in the Strub Stakes at Santa Anita in Arcadia, Calif.

Lund's eligibility

The World Anti-Doping Agency filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport over the Olympic eligibility of U.S. skeleton racer Zach Lund, who was not suspended by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency after testing positive for a banned steroid masking agent in November.

Armstrong, Crow
announce their split

Lance Armstrong and Sheryl Crow have split, the couple announced in a joint statement. The seven-time Tour de France champion and the rock star had announced their engagement in September.

Pro football // The FBI searched the rental car of Seattle Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren this week - without incident - after security officials found the hood ajar and the car not in the spot where hotel valets had parked it. An FBI investigator found there was a reasonable explanation but did not reveal what that explanation was.

Media // Tampa Tribune sportswriter Rozel A. Lee was fired after she admitted to manipulating the balloting for a local high school football award, the newspaper reported. Lee, who was among 19 journalists and high school coaches who ranked football players competing for the Guy Toph Award, said she intentionally gave her lowest ranking to a leading player to make it more likely the player she favored would win.

Weightlifting // The Court of Arbitration for Sport rejected the appeals of Australians Camilla Fogagnolo and Jenna Myers - who have been banned from competition for two years for using steroids - after both tested positive for the stimulant benzylpiperazine in October.
