We're pleased that the Medical Examiner's report has been released, as it is an important step in the healing process for Ereck's family and the UCF community. For those who have read media accounts about Ereck's death, let me assure you that we have acted compassionately toward Ereck's family and with a thorough review of the facts.
As we have said throughout, Ereck passed all of his physicals and was cleared to participate fully by UCF team physicians. Our staff advised Ereck of his sickle-cell trait and monitored his physical condition at every practice and workout.
Student-athletes who carry the sickle-cell trait regularly participate in all levels of athletics nationwide.
With that in mind, our medical staff will make a comprehensive assessment of the findings in the Medical Examiner's report. And let me say this clearly: if our staff determines changes should be made in light of this report, I am committed to making those happen.
Although we continue to move forward as a program, we will never forget Ereck. Our players will honor his memory in part by wearing an "EP" logo on their helmets this season.
Personally, I will remember how our football program traveled to Naples after Ereck's death to attend his funeral as a team. It was an emotional tribute to an outstanding young man, and the memories from that day will stay with me for the rest of my life.
Thank you for the support you have shown us during this difficult time.
