UCF alum Marquette Smith fills in at Trinity Prep

Former Lake Howell All-American and UCF running back Marquette Smith, a new assistant football coach for Trinity Prep, is directing the conclusion of spring practice for the Saints while head coach Drew Nemec takes a three-week medical leave.

"Drew is taking a short leave of absence to take care of some things. He will be back," Trinity Prep Athletic Director Kathy Finnucan said Tuesday.

Nemec missed games in the second half of Trinity Prep's 2006 season after suffering a stroke caused by a rare blood disorder.

Recruiting news

Oviedo girls volleyball coach Chad Long reports that three Lions seniors have made their college choices and a former star has switched schools midway through her college career. From the Class of 2008, Kirsty Blue has signed with Virginia Tech and Chelsea Rugg has signed with Mercer. Kathleen Curry will be a walk-on candidate at UCF.

Jen Darty, a second-team All-Atlantic Sun Conference sophomore for Mercer last fall, has transferred to College of Charleston, which is coming off a 26-8 season and its fourth NCAA Tournament appearance. Darty will be eligible to play her junior season in 2008.

Eddie D'Haiti of Oak Ridge, an all Metro-Conference performer, signed with Youngstown State Tuesday. The 6-foot-7 forward averaged 16 points and 11 rebounds for the Pioneers.
