Reliever Jason Stoffel, 27, spent most of this year at Double-A Bowie, but has pitched well since he was summoned back to Triple-A Norfolk. Stoffel allowed a run on two hits and a walk in his first appearance of this stint with the Tides, and in five appearances entering Friday, didn't allow a hit and issued just two walks with 10 strikeouts.

Left-hander John Means reversed a string of bad results Wednesday with one unearned run in six innings of three-hit ball. Before that, Means — who was promoted from High-A Frederick with a 1.80 ERA in nine starts — had allowed 11 runs in 11 innings over his previous three starts. He's 2-3 with a 4.57 ERA in eight starts for Bowie, with 12 strikeouts and 10 walks in 41 1/3 innings.

Outfielder Conor Bierfeldt, 25, was named Carolina League Player of the Month for June, a month when he hit .279/.351/.628 with eight home runs and 25 RBIs. In one stretch that spanned June 27 to July 2, he homered five times in six games. Entering Friday's action, he was 7-for-30 in July with two home runs and five RBIs.

Low-A Delmarva

Entering Friday's game, 2015 first-round draft pick Ryan Mountcastle had 13 hits in seven July games to raise his batting average to .300 for the first time since the second day of the season. Mountcastle, who is playing shortstop in Delmarva, hit .314 with four home runs in June, and batted .394 with three doubles and four RBIs in the first seven games this month.

First baseman Xu Guiyuan, the first player signed out of MLB's development academies in China, is off to a solid start in the Gulf Coast League. He had five hits in his two games entering Friday. Xu played just six of the first 13 games, appearing off the bench three times, but started 8-for-14. … 2016 first-round pick Cody Sedlock is scheduled to debut for Aberdeen on Saturday.
