Stocked with recent draft picks, Aberdeen IronBirds open home schedule Wednesday

Starting their 11th season in Aberdeen, the IronBirds open their home schedule Wednesday night at 7:35 p.m. at Ripken Stadium against the Hudson Valley Renegades, a Tampa Bay Rays affiliate.

The Orioles' short-season Single-A affiliate overhauled its coaching staff this season, with Gary Allenson, formerly the manager at Triple-A Norfolk, taking over. Former Orioles pitcher Alan Mills is Aberdeen's pitching coach and former Double-A Bowie manager Brad Komminsk is the batting coach.

The IronBirds opened the season on the road against the Renegades on Monday, losing 7-3.

The IronBirds' starting lineup in that game featured four 2012 draft picks: third baseman Torsten Boss (eighth round), shortstop Joel Hutter (10th round), catcher Sam Kimmel (18th round) and left fielder Will Howard (22nd round).

Three more 2012 draft picks make their professional debut with Aberdeen: Gene Escat (23rd round), Creede Simpson (25th round) and Anthony Vega (30th round).

Sander Beck, a Maryland product, joins the pitching staff as a nondrafted free agent, and Roderick Bernadina, the younger brother of Washington Nationals outfielder Roger Bernadina, started in center field in the opener. Bernadina played for the Gulf Coast League Orioles last season.
