Orioles pitchers Dylan Bundy and Wei-Yin Chen might have drawn the most attention at Wednesday’s bullpen sessions, but catcher Matt Wieters' assessment of the day might be one of the highlights of the early days of camp.
Asked whether anyone besides Bundy and Chen stood out, Wieters made it a point to single out left-hander Brian Matusz, who went 1-9 with a 10.69 ERA last season.
Wieters said Matusz’s mechanics appear improved and his form reminds him of Matusz’s breakout season in 2010, when he was 10-12 with a 4.30 ERA in 32 starts.
“After having that difficult year last year, for him to have the ball come out of his hand the way it was today, I was impressed,” Wieters said. “He looked a lot like Matusz from 2010.”
Wieters also said he was impressed with Chris Tillman’s bullpen session.
“The [starting rotation] competition is going to make everybody better,” Wieters said. “It’s going to be a pretty exciting spring.”Copyright © 2015, The Baltimore Sun
