I expect the Orioles to come away from there with a player or two.
That’s what they did last year, when the club traded for pitcher Dana Eveland and selected Ryan Flaherty in the Rule 5 draft. They weren’t exactly headline grabbers, certainly not when Albert Pujols and Jose Reyes, among others, were signed during that time.
That was executive vice president Dan Duquette’s first winter meetings as the man in charge for the Orioles. His approach was pretty simple; he targeted guys he thought were undervalued and grabbed them. That’s what he did all season, and, for the most part, it worked.
I can’t imagine he deviates from that plan this winter – although I could see the Orioles landing a mid-tier free agent or two, whether that’s somebody else’s or their own, such as Joe Saunders or Nate McLouth.
I also could see the Orioles trading for a bat, preferably one that can play left field, first base or designated hitter, since there aren’t a lot of cost-effective options in free agency.
The one who would be the best fit is Kansas City's Billy Butler, but the Royals aren’t going to give away one of their most popular players. And plenty of teams would love to have Butler, so the Orioles’ package of players would have to be enticing.
But that’s for Duquette and his staff to figure out.
What I want from you is one name – the one player you think the Orioles will end up with when all of the offseason dust settles. I can’t imagine they land a Josh Hamilton or Zack Greinke, but if you disagree, then go ahead and make that your choice.
Just give me one name – and a reason why (or what it took to get them) would be good, too.
