Jack Cust's comeback attempt will go through Orioles' minor league camp

The Orioles have signed veteran Jack Cust to a minor league deal, an industry source confirmed Wednesday.

The 35-year-old Cust will not receive an invitation to major league spring training, so he will report to the club’s minor league camp at Twin Lakes Park.

Cust had a tryout during the Orioles’ minicamp in Sarasota, Fla., last month. At that time, Cust said he was looking for an opportunity to get back into the big leagues and was open to accepting an assignment in Triple-A.

That's likely where he'd begin the 2014 regular season.

Cust hasn’t played in the big leagues since July 2011 with the Seattle Mariners. He was in major league camp with the Tampa Bay Rays last season, but he was cut during spring training and decided not to play during the 2013 season.

This will be Cust’s second tour in the Orioles organization. He played 28 games for the Orioles in 2003 and 2004, 27 of them coming in 2003.

Cust, who averaged 28 homers with the Oakland Athletics from 2007 to 2009, owns an impressive .374 career on-base percentage and drew 100 walks in back-to-back seasons with Oakland in 2007 and 2008, including a American League-high 111 walks in 2008.

He also led the AL in strikeouts for three straight years from 2007 to 2009, averaging 182 strikeouts over that span.

MASNSports.com first reported that the Orioles had signed Cust.
