Tampa Bay's Alex Cobb compares Orioles to last season's Boston Red Sox

Tampa Bay Rays right-hander Alex Cobb obviously didn’t have one of his better nights Tuesday against the Orioles at Camden Yards, lasting just four innings. And his Rays aren’t what we all expected they would be this year, losing 4-2 on Tuesday to fall to 64-68 on the season.

But Cobb’s not minimizing what the Orioles have done this year. In fact, he heaped some praise on the American League East-leading club after Tuesday’s game, comparing them to the Boston Red Sox squad that won last year’s World Series.

Here’s what he said:

“You can make that point that we’re not playing at the top of our game,’’ Cobb said, “but when teams are having seasons like the Orioles are having right now, those situations go in their favor more often than not.

“You can look at it both ways. I felt facing this Orioles team and seeing the way things are going for them almost the way I felt when I was facing the Red Sox last year. The quality of at-bats one through nine, and making situations into their favor, and not sitting back and letting things happen. They’re going out and making things happen, they’re not waiting for it to happen.

“You can look at it both ways. Maybe we aren’t on the top of our game right now, but they’re definitely the aggressors right now in making things happen.

“There might be a little bit of a gap right there [between the Orioles and the Rays]. And there is a gap in the standings also.’’
