Some Orioles' firsts: A Schoop hit and a Flaherty Eutaw St. homer

The Orioles have had several firsts occur in Wednesday’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays, including Jonathan Schoop’s first big-league hit and Ryan Flaherty’s first Eutaw Street homer.

Schoop, the club’s 21-year-old top infield prospect, made his big league debut batting eighth and playing second base Wednesday.

In his first major league at-bat, Schoop lined the second pitch he saw from Esmil Rogers into center field. Everyone in the Orioles’ dugout clapped as Schoop stood on first base. They retrieved the ball for him and then threw a fake one in the crowd – the old, first-hit switcheroo.

Schoop scored the first run of his career a few moments later when Ryan Flaherty homered for the ninth time this season. But it was a first, too.

Flaherty’s homer landed on Eutaw Street beyond the right-field flag court. It was the first of his career to land there and extended this season’s record of 11 Eutaw Street homers. Overall, 77 homers have been hit there; 31 by the Orioles.

Some other firsts: Jason Pridie grounded out in his first at-bat as an Oriole. Steve Clevenger, a Baltimore native, grounded out in his first start at Camden Yards.
