Sports Orioles Orioles Insider

Should the Orioles make a trade or stick with their current group of players?

As Dan Connolly allows me to serve as a guest bartender today, I'll take a swing at a topic that likely interests a lot of you: the July 31 nonwaiver trade deadline.

It has been a slow season on the trade front so far this summer.

There have been only a few rumors linking the Orioles to one of the coveted trade pieces, and most of the available players have issues. The Orioles remain in first place in the American League East, but they can get better by making a savvy deal, right?

The Orioles won’t sacrifice their future, so as many calls as they might get inquiring about Kevin Gausman, Dylan Bundy or Hunter Harvey, it would take a huge return just for the club to think about it.

I wrote in today's newspaper about five players who the Orioles potentially could target in a trade. But, honestly, there’s not a deal out there I like.

Ideally, I think Philadelphia Phillies second baseman Chase Utley is one of the only players who makes the Orioles much better. But Utley has tremendous trade protection.

And I’m not sure the Orioles have -- or are willing to give up -- what the Phillies would need to part with Utley.

But now it’s your turn. What do you think?

Daily Think Special: Do the Orioles need to make a deal to keep the division lead and go deep into the postseason, or can Buck Showalter keep winning with the group he has behind the whole “I like our guys” mantra?
