Talk about a conversation starter. These granite candles from Shoemaker Country in Ellicott City not only have a function, they are pieces of art. The candles, which can use either lamp oil or citronella oil, sell for between $48 to $98. They are made from recycled granite, and can be used inside or outdoors. The candles are made for the store by a family from southern Pennsylvania, according to John Shoemaker, who owns the store with his brother, Mike. "This fits in to our idea that we produce locally whenever we can," John Shoemaker said. "They have been a popular alternative to candles on the table. They don't visually interfere with conversation and there is no wax to clean up after. We think it is a beautiful way to use granite that previously may have been discarded."
