Nolan Reimold leaves game with tight hamstring, Luis Ayala went to hospital

The new season is just six games old and the Orioles are already struggling to hold the 25-man roster together.

Left fielder Nolan Reimold had to be removed from Sunday's game with a tight hamstring and reliever Luis Ayala was taken to a local hospital after becoming ill during the middle innings, which left manager Buck Showalter and executive vice president of baseball operations Dan Duquette considering possible roster replacements in case either one needs to be placed on the disabled list.

Reimold's right hamstring cramped up when he was trying to beat out a double play ball in the sixth inning, but he downplayed the severity of the injury as the team prepared to board its charter flight to Boston.

"I just had a little cramp, spasm, whatever you want to call it," he said. "It just kept getting tighter and tighter. I sprinted down to first to try to beat out that double play and I think [first base coach Wayne] Kirby could tell it was starting to bother me, so it was probably smart to come in and evaluate it."

Though Showalter seemed concerned that he might need a replacement for Reimold in Boston, the left fielder hopes to play Monday.

"I think so," said Reimold, who is 4-for-17 (.235) in his first six games this season. "I came in here, did some ice and [electronic stimulation] and calmed it down. It's a little tight still, but it's not cramping up or anything anymore, so it should be all right."

Reimold battled back from 2012 neck surgery that limited him to just 16 games. He had no problem with hamstrings this spring, but was eased into a defensive role because of shoulder soreness.

Showalter said that Ayala fell ill during the game and, after evaluation by the medical staff, it was decided to send him to the hospital. He headed to Boston after the team flight left.
