The Orioles have called up first baseman Joe Mahoney from Triple-A Norfolk to replace injured infielder Wilson Betemit. This is Mahoney’s second stint with the big league club this season. He had a five-day call-up in July right before the All-Star break, going 0-for-3 in the one game he appeared in.
The 25-year old won the Orioles' 2010 Brooks Robinson Minor League Player of the Year Award, when he hit .319/.378/.545 for Double-A Bowie. This season, he is hitting .263/.317/.390 for Norfolk.
Depending on what happens tonight, Mahoney’s stint in Baltimore could be a short one. If the Orioles don’t need to use Steve Johnson out of the bullpen in long-relief, then the right-hander is likely to start Saturday’s game in Detroit. If Johnson is needed tonight, the Orioles might need to call up a starter for Saturday, probably leaving Mahoney out of the mix.
In other pregame news…
** Orioles manager Buck Showalter said he spoke to outfielder Nolan Reimold today, and that the injured outfielder is doing well in his rehab from a neck surgery. The Orioles’ Opening Day left fielder has been out since June 25 with a herniated disk.
Reimold has completed 4 weeks of an 8-week rehab, Showalter said, but he is still not far along enough to know his availability for potential postseason play.
** Starter Jason Hammel threw off a mound for the second time since surgery on right knee in mid-July yesterday, and the session didn’t go as well as the first one did. Hammel’s knee is fine, but his arm is a little more “cranky” than it was the day after his first session, Showalter said.
** Showalter is sticking with the same lineup he has the last two nights as the Orioles go for the sweep of the Red Sox
