One more Prediction Friday before we say goodbye to the NFL season (I know many of you said goodbye when Billy Cundiff’s kick sailed into infamy).
Sunday is the Super Bowl (glad that nine-week wait after the conference championships is over) and I’m intrigued by the matchup.
I’ve been around sports long enough to know it is foolish to pick against the better quarterback in a big game. And, no matter how much ice is in Eli Manning’s veins, I’d rather have Tom Brady at crunch time.
But I am just not sold on the New England Patriots’ defense. Not with the way Manning, Hakeem Nicks and Victor Cruz are playing.
So I think the other Manning boy succeeds in Indianapolis this weekend. I’m taking the Giants to win, 28-24. Eli engineers a late, fourth quarter TD to Cruz and is named Super Bowl MVP.
Give me your prediction: score, winner and player of the game.
Since the bar resides in Orioles Insider, let’s not throw away a chance to talk baseball, too.
I think most of the patrons that come here know that I serve it straight -- no chaser. I don’t try to bamboozle you. The Orioles finished 69-93 last year and in fifth place in the American League East, 28 games out of first.
I don’t see it getting much better in 2012, especially given the division. What I want to know is how you think the AL East will shake out this year. Last season, this was the order: Yankees, Rays, Red Sox, Blue Jays, Orioles.
I believe in the pitching moves the Yankees made this offseason. And I believe in the Rays’ young pitching, although I think it’s a little overhyped. I also like what I saw with the younger Blue Jays in Toronto in September, and I believe the Red Sox, although still a force, are in a bit of a transition. I think all four of those teams end up over. 500.
But here is my order for the division: Yankees, Rays, Blue Jays, Red Sox, Orioles.
Now give me your thoughts.
