Orioles all-star catcher Matt Wieters is headed back to Norfolk this year.
And so are all of his 2012 Orioles’ teammates. At least for one day.
The Orioles are expected to play their Triple-A affiliate, the Norfolk Tides, at Harbor Park on Wednesday afternoon, April 4, before the big-league club heads back to Baltimore for a workout Thursday at Camden Yards. The game in Norfolk has not yet been officially announced by the organization.
The Orioles’ 2012 regular season kicks off Friday, April 6 at 3:05 p.m. against the Minnesota Twins at Camden Yards.
The Orioles’ spring training schedule currently lists Monday, April 2 against Florida Southern in Sarasota as their final spring tune-up. But the club may play another exhibition game on April 3 in Sarasota before heading to Virginia for the April 4 contest versus the Tides.
The Orioles trip to Norfolk will be their third in the past five years – but is the first time they’ll be facing their own affiliate there. The Orioles played the Washington Nationals in preseason games at Harbor Park in 2007 and 2009.
Wieters is probably the most significant current Oriole who previously played for the Tides, batting .305 in 39 games for them in 2009 before his May call-up to Baltimore. Most of the Orioles’ young hurlers, however, pitched for the Tides within the past two years.
