Orioles to call up Schoop, Urrutia and Stinson

CLEVELAND -- With Norfolk’s season over, the Orioles are expected to add three new players from their Triple-A club to their expanded roster Tuesday in Cleveland.

The Orioles will call up top position player prospect Jonathan Schoop as well as outfielder Henry Urrutia and right-hander Josh Stinson, according to a source.

As expected, several other players will go from Norfolk to the club’s spring training facility in Sarasota to participate in instructional league activities to be available if needed down the stretch. Left-hander Tsuyoshi Wada, outfielder Jason Pridie, right-hander Steve Johnson, left-hander Mike Belfiore, outfielder Chris Dickerson and left-hander Chris Jones will head to Florida, the Virginian-Pilot reported.

The Orioles will also add infielder Ryan Flaherty, who was optioned to low Class-A Delmarva and then transferred to high Class-A Frederick to get at bats. Flaherty is expected to be en route to Cleveland following Monday's Keys game.

Schoop, the Orioles No. 3-ranked prospect, will make his first appearance on the Orioles’ regular-season roster. He hit .278/.330/.396 with nine homers and 34 RBIs in 70 games at Norfolk despite missing significant time with a stress fracture in his lower back.

Urrutia, a Cuban defector who was called up after the all-star break and filled in mostly as a designated hitter against right-handed pitching, hit .269/.269/.308 in 52 plate appearances before he was optioned back to Norfolk in mid-August.

Stinson, a starting pitcher, will likely join the Orioles bullpen. He gave the club 2 1/3 scoreless relief innings during a brief call up last month

Norfolk could have earned the International League wild-card spot with a win on Monday, but they lost 1-0 in 10 innings. The loss, combined with Rochester’s win, ended the Tides’ season.
