After missing the past four games with lower back spasms, Orioles third baseman Manny Machado is back in the starting lineup for Saturday afternoon’s game against the Mariners. He will bat seventh against Seattle right-hander Chris Young.
Orioles manager Buck Showalter indicated Friday that Machado could return Saturday, especially since it was better than bringing him back in a night game before a day game.
Still, Showalter said Machado was available to pinch hit in Friday’s 2-1 10-inning win over the Mariners. Machado was stretching in the Orioles dugout in the 10th, and Showalter said Machado could have pinch hit for Ryan Flaherty that inning.
Showalter added that he might tweak the starting rotation. Right-hander Miguel Gonzalez is slated to start Sunday’s series finale in Seattle, but Showalter hasn’t announced the rotation for the home series against the Los Angeles Angels following Monday’s off day. Chris Tillman (Tuesday), Wei-Yin Chen (Wednesday) and Kevin Gausman (Thursday) are in line to pitch against the Angels.
The manager also said he had to check whether left-hander Brian Matusz was available for Saturday’s game. Matusz threw 27 pitches in 1 2/3 scoreless innings in Friday’s win against a lefty-heavy Seattle lineup. The Mariners are again starting seven lefties and one switch hitter.
