Orioles still mulling another rehab start for Wei-Yin Chen

Despite the success of left-hander Wei-Yin Chen’s rehab start at Double-A Bowie on Saturday night, Orioles manager Buck Showalter said the organization is still deciding whether or not he needs another rehab start before rejoining the team.

Chen allowed four runs in five innings in a 6-4 Bowie win and showed minimal rust after not pitching in game action since May 12. At one point, he retired seven straight Harrisburg Senators, including Washington Nationals left fielder Bryce Harper.

Chen said after the outing that he felt pain free, but the Orioles are waiting to make the decision. It was thought Chen could pitch at Chicago on Thursday or New York on Friday.

“I watched a lot of the outing, so just caution that he’s been almost two months without pitching,” Showalter said. “We’ve come a long way, so he’s close, very close.”

Other notes

-- Nolan Reimold went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Bowie’s win over Harrisburg on Sunday. The Baysox were scheduled to play a doubleheader, but Game 2 was postponed because of rain.

-- Showalter said he wants to avoid using left-hander T.J. McFarland and right-hander Kevin Gausman -- both of whom pitched Friday night -- out of the bullpen Sunday, so left-handers Troy Patton and Brian Matusz are available to go multiple innings if the situation warrants it.

-- Left-hander Tsuyoshi Wada allowed two runs on five hits in 6 1/3 innings Saturday for Triple-A Norfolk. He struck out six and walked two. He received his third consecutive no decision, but his ERA is down to 5.74.

“He’s consistent with his fastball and it’s gotten a tad better each time out,” Showalter said. “It’s encouraging, it really is. That was one of the highlights of me reading the minor league reports today.”
