Orioles sign minor leaguer Scott Savastano

The Orioles have signed infielder/outfielder Scott Savastano to a minor league deal without an invite to spring training.

Savastano, 27, has spent his entire six-season minor league career in the Seattle Mariners organization. Last year, he hit .235 with a .293 on-base percentage and three homers in 205 plate appearances with Triple-A Tacoma. He'll have a chance to make the Orioles' Triple-A roster in Norfolk.

A native of New Hampshire who played high school ball in Massachusetts and college ball in New Hampshire, Savastano also played for current Orioles’ executive vice president Dan Duquette’s Pittsfield Dukes of the New England Collegiate Baseball League.

The 6-foot-4, right-handed hitting Savastano has a career .360 on-base percentage in his minor league career – which is something Duquette looks for in players that he signs.

Primarily a corner infielder and outfielder, he has played every position in his minor league career besides center field. He has pitched four games in relief. Of his 406 minor league games, 129 have come at first base, 87 at second and 64 at third. He was a 28th round pick of the Mariners in 2008.
