Orioles sign Cumberland native Aaron Laffey to minor league deal

The Orioles have signed left-hander Aaron Laffey, a Cumberland native and Allegany High graduate, to a minor league contract, the team announced Thursday.

The deal does not include an automatic invitation to major league spring training camp. Laffey will report to the organization’s minor league minicamp to open the spring, and from there, he would try to earn some innings in major league camp, according to a source.

Ultimately, he'd be competing for a rotation spot at Triple-A Norfolk.

Laffey, 28, has a 25-29 career record with a 4.45 ERA over parts of seven major league seasons with the Cleveland Indians, Seattle Mariners, New York Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays and New York Mets.

He made just five major league appearances last season, spending most of the year at the Triple-A level, where he was 6-8 with a 6.34 ERA in 23 games (22 starts).

Laffey spent time in four different organizations last season, making the Mets’ Opening Day roster after coming to camp as a nonroster invitee. But he was designated for assignment by the Mets in late April after four appearances with New York.

He was claimed by the Blue Jays on April 23, but made just one start for them before he was designated for assignment and refused an outright assignment to the minors.

Laffey spent the remainder of the year pitching in the Pacific Coast League for the Triple-A affiliates of the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Milwaukee Brewers.
