National TV restrictions force Orioles to set May 24 game for same afternoon as NCAA lacrosse Final Four

The Orioles have announced that their May 24 game against the Cleveland Indians has been set for 12:35 p.m., which is less than a half-hour from the start of the first of two NCAA men's lacrosse semifinals at M&T Bank Stadium that day.

The lacrosse Final Four games are scheduled for 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. But the Orioles are prevented from scheduling their game in the evening because they are contractually prohibited from competing with the Fox prime time window from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. that day.

"Essentially, we can't play the game after 4:05 because of national television restrictions," Orioles vice president of communications and marketing Greg Bader said Sunday. "Playing at 12:30 is the best option for Orioles fans to get into the ballpark."

The specific parking plans, however, have not yet been finalized. The parking lots around the two stadiums are used for events at both, but with two events at once, it could create issues.

"It's one of those things that we are going to work out the logistics over the next couple of weeks," Bader said. "Hopefully, there won't be an interruption in the normal routine for our fans."

Though scheduling conflicts between M&T Bank Stadium and Camden Yards are rare because of preset contractual priorities, they do occur periodically -- and sometimes controversially.

Most notably, of course, was the scheduling problem last year that forced the NFL to send the Super Bowl champion Ravens on the road for the league's Thursday night season opener.

The Orioles also will share the Camden Yards stadium complex during the upcoming Labor Day weekend, when Navy hosts Ohio State for an Aug. 30 football game at M&T Bank Stadium, but the games will be played at different times.

Navy and Ohio State will play at noon in college football at M&T Bank Stadium, and the Orioles will host the Minnesota Twins at 7:05 p.m. at Camden Yards.
