Orioles select Ryan Flaherty from Cubs in Rule 5 draft

In the Rule 5 draft, the Orioles selected Ryan Flaherty, a left-handed hitting infielder/outfielder from the Chicago Cubs roster.

The 25-year-old was a first-round sandwich pick in 2008 (41st overall) and batted .280 with 19 homers combined at Double-A and Triple-A.

He is from Portland, Maine, and played at Vanderbilt.

“Ryan is a high draft pick from an excellent college program, and we really like his bat," Orioles executive vice president of baseball operations Dan Duquette said. "He has a reasonable chance to contribute at the major league level this season.”

The Orioles must keep him on their 40-man roster all season or offer him back to the Cubs at half the purchase price.

No Orioles minor leaguers were taken in the major league phase. The Orioles also selected two players in the minor league phase: left-hander Andrew Loomis from the Philadelphia Phillies' organization and infielder Matt Sweeney from the Tampa Bay Rays' system.

The assumption is that the Orioles can now complete their Taylor Teagarden trade with the Rangers.

There is a player to be named later in that one. The name that I've heard as being in that deal is infielder Greg Miclat, a former fifth-round selection.  That's not official, though.

The annual Rule 5 draft allows teams to select certain minor leaguers who have been left off other clubs' 40-man rosters for $50,000. Those eligible players -- ones signed at age 19 or older who have remained in the organization for at least four years or those signed at age 18 or younger who have been in the organization for at least five years -- must stay on the selecting squad's 25-man roster all season or be offered back to the original club for $25,000.
