The Orioles officially placed left-hander T.J. McFarland on the bereavement list Monday and recalled right-hander Preston Guilmet from Triple-A Norfolk.
McFarland was expected to travel Monday to Chicago to be with his family after the death of his grandmother over the weekend.
McFarland, who picked up the win Sunday after pitching a scoreless inning in the Orioles' 3-2, 10-inning victory over the Seattle Mariners, is expected to miss the first two games of this week's three-game series against the Los Angeles Angels at Camden Yards.
Guilmet has been back and forth between the Orioles and Norfolk this season. This will be his sixth stint in the major leagues since he was acquired April 7 in a trade with the Cleveland Indians for minor leaguer Torsten Boss.
In 10 appearances with the Orioles, Guilmet is 0-1 with a 5.23 ERA. For the Tides, he is 4-1 with a 4.72 ERA and eight saves in 29 games.
McFarland is scheduled to return Thursday for the series finale against the Angels. Monday’s day off counts toward the bereavement time, so McFarland is expected to miss two games.
