Orioles pregame: Orioles vs. Twins

The Orioles are going for a 3-0 start and a season sweep of the Twins today at Camden Yards.

Third baseman Mark Reynolds won't be in the lineup today. He took a batted ball of his left calf last night, but both Reynolds and manager Buck Showalter said he was able to play.

Showalter said the reason is because he wants to get Wilson Betemit, today's third baseman, his first start in the field. Leftfielder Endy Chavez will also make his first start of the season.

With the DH being able to move around, we've got some interchangable parts," Showalter said. "It's more about getting everybody on the field the first three days. Nick (Johnson) played first bast last night. I think it's important from my experience that everybody gets on the field somewhere and gets in that mix, especially before we go on the road.

"It has the potential to be a strength of ours that we have a lot of interchangable parts," Showalter added. "It's something we worked hard to try to improve on last year, because our bench and the flexibility and the drop off when we had injuries wasn't good . With Endy being able to play multiple positions and Wilson and Nick (Johnson) being able to play a position, we don't really have somebody that defensively can't go somewhere, unlike last year."

Right-hander Jason Hammel makes his first start in an Orioles uniform today. He hopes to match his predecessors, Jake Arrieta and Tommy Hunter, who each threw seven shutout innings the past two days.

Right-hander Anthony Swarzak will start for the Twins, replacing right-hander Liam Hendriks, who came down with food poisoning after Friday's season opener.

"Coming out of spring training, I was watching tape on him," Showalter said of Swarzak. "I expect him to pitch well. The adjustment isn't that strong. There's no secrets, between the video and the scouting reports. Being in spring training, I think we played the Twins 70 times. There's not many secrets."
